{"id":175,"date":"2026-08-17T18:36:35","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T18:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inkit.co.ke\/?p=175"},"modified":"2026-08-17T18:36:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T18:36:35","slug":"kenya-to-build-10-specialised-maternal-and-newborn-health-facilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inkit.co.ke\/?p=175","title":{"rendered":"Kenya to Build 10 Specialised Maternal and Newborn Health Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nairobi 16th August,2025,by Faith Museng&#8217;ya<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kenyan government plans to build 10 specialised maternal and newborn health facilities in counties with a high number of maternal and newborn deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 250-bed facilities will be built in Nairobi, Bomet, Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, West Pokot and Uasin Gishu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale says the project will help bring important maternal and newborn services closer to communities and improve access to quality healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project will receive KES 4.4 billion from Amsons Group through the <em>Mama na Mtoto Kwanza<\/em> initiative, in partnership with the Kenyan government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The facilities will offer services such as antenatal and postnatal care, maternity services, Caesarean sections, surgery, maternal intensive care and newborn intensive care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government says the investment will focus on counties with the greatest need. A mapping exercise found that 26 counties account for about 60 per cent of maternal deaths in Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government is also working to increase the number of skilled health workers. So far, 900 healthcare workers have been trained in obstetric care, while another 900 have received training in newborn care. The government is also recruiting 5,000 nurses and midwives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, KES 4 billion is being provided through the Social Health Authority to support maternal deliveries in Level 2 and Level 3 health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction of the new facilities is expected to begin with groundbreaking ceremonies in September.
