Public healthcare services in Laikipia County have been severely disrupted following an ongoing nurses’ strike that entered its 27th day on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
The strike, which began on June 16, has affected operations in public hospitals, forcing many patients to seek treatment in private facilities or travel to neighbouring counties for medical care.
The nurses, under the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM), are demanding payment of seven months’ salary arrears, promotions, better medical cover, and the employment of more healthcare workers.

They have also raised concerns over staff shortages, poor working conditions, lack of essential equipment, and delays in implementing agreed employment terms.
Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu is facing pressure to resolve the dispute and restore normal healthcare services in the county.
County officials and union leaders are expected to continue negotiations in an effort to end the strike and ensure patients can access essential medical services once again.
